Beyond the Ethics Board: Strengthening Ethical Practice in Qualitative Humanities and Social Science Research

This event will mark the launch of a new report on 'Strengthening Ethical Practice in Qualitative Humanities and Social Science Research', funded by the University of Manchester’s Enhancing Research Culture Fund. The study engages with the experiences of UK academics on obtaining ethical clearance for projects with human subjects and sheds light on the current strength and limitations of the system. The report launch will be followed by two roundtables featuring speakers from the University of Manchester and beyond. Speakers will reflect on the institutional and practical challenges of navigating research ethics in UK higher education institutions. A second panel will pay particular attention to research conducted with communities populations and international partners, including non-academic actors. What should ethics review achieve, and for whom? This roundtable brings together different perspectives on the purpose and practice of ethics review, exploring the multiple and sometimes competing expectations placed on ethics committees by researchers, institutions, communities and other stakeholders. 14:45–15:00 - Coffee 15:00–16:15 - Roundtable 2: Whose Ethics? Ethics Review Beyond the University How can ethics review support ethical research beyond the university? This roundtable focuses on research with communities and external partners, particularly in crisis-affected contexts, and asks whether, and how, university-based ethics processes can support meaningful, responsible and context-sensitive engagement beyond institutional boundaries. 16:15–16:30 - Closing Remarks --- PRACTICAL The room, full speaker list, and a copy of the report will be released to registrants over the coming weeks.
