Title: Metal additive manufacturing: From melt pools to metal structures By Yuze Huang (Lecturer in laser manufacturing, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Manchester) Abstract: Metal additive manufacturing offers unprecedented opportunities to produce complex and high-performance metallic structures, yet achieving consistent quality requires a fundamental understanding of the physical processes occurring across multiple length and time scales. At the heart of these processes lies the melt pool, where complex laser–material interactions, heat and mass transfer, and fluid flow ultimately determine defect formation, geometrical accuracy and the quality of the manufactured structure. This presentation will share our research on metal additive manufacturing across different scales, from understanding melt-pool and keyhole dynamics to controlling defects and improving the quality of manufactured structures. Physics-based modelling, process optimisation and in-situ monitoring are integrated to better understand process–structure relationships and enable more reliable and intelligent manufacturing. Case studies covering laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and laser directed energy deposition using both powder and wire feedstocks (DED-LB/p and DED-LB/w) will be presented. Finally, the talk will discuss how improved understanding and control of manufacturing processes can enable the production of increasingly complex and functional metallic structures, including emerging opportunities in additively manufactured metallic metamaterials.
