About
Join us for this seminar by Susanna Röblitz (Bergen) as part of the Maths in the Life Sciences seminar series (and the online North West Seminar Series in Mathematical Biology and Data Sciences in collaboration with Liverpool Universities). Title: Stochasticity in regulatory networks: A key for cellular differentiation and reproductive success Abstract: Biological noise is the cell-to-cell variability that occurs in genetically identical populations due to randomness in molecular reactions and environmental fluctuations. This noise is divided into two primary categories: intrinsic noise and extrinsic noise. Intrinsic noise comes from the probabilistic nature of individual biochemical reactions (such as transcription, translation, and molecular binding) happening directly at a specific gene or pathway. Extrinsic noise comes from fluctuations in the shared cellular environment or upstream machinery that globally or pathway-specifically affect multiple processes across the cell. In my talk, I will showcase how we deal with these two categories of noise on two modelling examples. In the first part, I will highlight a projection method known as Markov state modelling that allows us to infer the long-time dynamic behavior of cellular phenotypes from stochastic gene-regulatory networks (intrinsic noise). In the second part, I will demonstrate on a mathematical model of the human menstrual cycle that randomness is a critical biological mechanism in follicular recruitment and selection in reproductive biology (extrinsic noise). The talk will be also be streamed via Teams, please contact carl.whitfield@manchester.ac.uk or igor.chernyavsky@manchester.ac.uk for the link, or sign up to the mailing list.
